Only then did I find God’s I’m not racist I have a white friend shirt. I have done my best to give my daughters confidence, but the big issue with them is having low self-esteem. I come from a very loving family, not dysfunctional per the stereotypical definition, so I do believe my father thought he was doing the right thing and out of love. Was I was able to make a conscious effort to forgive her. He told me he did it to make me try harder, to try to prove him wrong. But at 50 years old I can tell you it wasn’t the right thing to do. I grew up never really knowing who I was because I was afraid of taking those chances to find out because I believed I’d fail. I was afraid to listen to myself. So I played it safe, believed I couldn’t do anything. But I’d just stay mediocre, that would be the safest bet for me. That message wasn’t my dad’s intent, but it was the result.
